Wentzville School District

• Cathy McCandless, a middle school communication arts teacher
in the Wentzville School District, has been recognized for the 2011
ABLE Excellence in Education Award for middle school teachers in
St. Charles County.

She found out about the recognition during a surprise
presentation at the annual Wentzville Middle School student awards
ceremony, and was presented the plaque by a former student.

The St. Charles County Alliance for Business, Learning and
Education (ABLE) was created to foster workforce readiness and
educational programs for K-12 students. The annual award honors
excellence in the teaching profession, and outstanding
professionals.

One of the goals of ABLE is to raise public awareness of the
exceptional quality of teaching students are receiving in St.

• The Wentzville School District class of 2011 has been awarded
more than $100,000 in local scholarships. Holt and Timberland high
school graduating seniors will receive their diplomas on May 28.
Individual amounts of these awards range from $100-$4,000.

STEM camps

• Partners for Progress of Greater St. Charles is organizing six
summer camps for seventh- through ninth-graders interested in
science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Activities will include online math programs from the Khan
Academy, building air rockets and balloon racers, and making
musical instruments.

Camps planned for the week of June 13 will be from 1-4 p.m. at
Fort Zumwalt West High School, and 9 a.m.-noon at Wentzville’s
Timberland High School and St. Charles Community College.

STEM camps also are planned for 9 a.m.-noon the week of July 18
at Barat Academy in Dardenne Prairie and Discovery Elementary
School in the Orchard Farm School District.

Enrollment is limited. Cost is $25-50. For more information,
