Students receive Midland City Education Memorial Fund Scholarships

The winners of the 2011 Midland City Education Memorial Fund
Scholarship have been announced.

This scholarship is awarded annually to a set number of students
whose parent(s) teach for Midland Public Schools. A reception took
place on June 7 to honor Sarah Arent, Evan Greskowiak, Katrina
Pfahl and Peter Shahin, who were each presented $650
scholarships.

Arent graduated with honors from H.H. Dow High School and plans
to attend Michigan State University to study elementary education.
She is the daughter of Mark and Susan Arent.

Greskowiak, son of Cindy Greskowiak, graduated from Freeland
High School and plans to attend Central Michigan University
majoring in elementary education.

Pfahl, daughter of Sylvia (Linas) Gilvydis and Todd (Stephanie)
Pfahl, graduated from Midland High School and will be attending
Saginaw Valley State University pursuing a degree in nursing.

Shahin, who served as president of the Midland High School
Student Council, news editor of the student newspaper and youth
governor of Michigan through the YMCA Youth in Government program,
graduated magna cum laude from MHS and had the honor of being one
of two student speakers at the commencement ceremony.

He plans to attend the University of Michigan majoring in
political science with the hope of joining the Foreign Service in
the U.S. State Department and serving the nation as a diplomat. He
is the son of Ric and Martha Shahin.
