Jackson students publish books
Jackson Elementary School second- and third-graders in Brenda Boehlke’s classroom have published books they wrote on what life was like 100 years ago.
The students began the research project using books and Internet sites to learn about communication, transportation, entertainment and work as it existed a century ago. The students worked independently, then within their “tribes” and finally as a group to gather data, organize it and create a one-page personal summary for each subtopic along with a hand-drawn illustration.
Boehlke assisted the students with prewriting strategies to organize ideas and form individual predictions for what life will be like when they are 100 years old. They created an illustration for this page also. In addition to book cover designs, the students included an illustration for each page of the book. In April, the books were sent to a publisher to be professionally bound. The books arrived the week of May 16, and on May 25, an author’s tea was held to honor the students.
