Education digest: Merit scholarships announced

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS • More than 40 area
high school students will receive $500 to $2,000 to start their
college careers, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. is announcing
today. These awards are renewable each year for up to four
years.

The students join 2,900 nationwide to receive 2011 National
Merit awards financed by colleges and universities.

Winners were judged on their academic records, recommendations
by school officials, SAT scores and essays.

The most recent winners are the third of four waves of
scholarship announcements from the National Merit Scholarship Corp.
The next announcement will be in July.

PATTONVILLE SCHOOLS New principal named
Don Furjes has been named principal of Remington Traditional
School, effective July 1. Furjes is currently the principal of
Avery Elementary School in the Webster Groves School District, a
position he has held for seven years. Furjes holds a bachelor’s
degree in physical education from the University of Missouri-St.
Louis, a master’s degree in educational administration from
Lindenwood University and a doctorate degree in education from St.
Louis University.

PARKWAY SCHOOLS District names new chief financial
officer
• Mark Stockwell has been named the new chief
financial officer for the Parkway district, effective July 1.

For the past four years, Stockwell has served as the CFO of the
Clayton district. From 1999 to 2007 Stockwell was the CFO of
Parkway. Stockwell replaces Wes Garton, who is leaving the district
after four years as the CFO.
